Athens, a city steeped in history and mythology, stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of ancient civilisations and their contribution to the world as we know it today. This vibrant capital of Greece is a fascinating blend of the past and the present, where ancient ruins coexist with modern urban life, offering a unique cultural experience to its visitors and residents alike.

The heart of Athens is undoubtedly the Acropolis, a symbol of the glory of ancient Greece. Sitting majestically on a rocky outcrop above the city, the Acropolis is home to several iconic structures, including the Parthenon, a temple dedicated to the goddess Athena, after whom the city is named. These ancient monuments are not only architectural marvels but also serve as a reminder of the city's long and illustrious history, from its days as a powerful city-state in the 5th century BC to its role in the development of democracy, philosophy, and the arts.

Beyond the historic sites, Athens is a bustling metropolis with a lively culture, delicious cuisine, and warm, welcoming people. The city's neighbourhoods, from the traditional Plaka to the trendy Psiri, offer a glimpse into the everyday life of Athenians, along with an array of cafes, restaurants, and shops. Whether exploring its ancient past, enjoying its vibrant present, or looking towards its promising future, Athens remains a city that captivates the imagination and enchants the soul.

Day 3 - Thessaloniki (Greece)- Depart 19:00

Thessaloniki, Greece's vibrant second city, is a place where history and modernity coalesce into a colourful tapestry of urban life. Nestled in the north of the country, by the Thermaic Gulf, Thessaloniki boasts a rich historical heritage that spans over 2,300 years. Founded in 315 BC by King Cassander of Macedon, the city was named after his wife, Thessalonike, a sister of Alexander the Great. This illustrious beginning set the stage for Thessaloniki's role as a crucial nexus of culture, commerce, and politics in the Byzantine Empire and beyond.

The city's historical architecture is a testament to its storied past, with landmarks such as the White Tower, the Rotunda of Galerius, and the Church of Saint Demetrius offering glimpses into its Byzantine and Ottoman history. Thessaloniki's UNESCO-listed Paleochristian and Byzantine monuments underscore its significance as a melting pot of religious and cultural influences. Meanwhile, the city's Roman, Byzantine, and Jewish heritage is meticulously preserved in its museums, showcasing a legacy of art, culture, and history that spans millennia.

Modern Thessaloniki is just as compelling, known for its vibrant food scene, lively waterfront, and bustling markets. The city's universities and cultural institutions inject a youthful energy into its ancient streets, making it a place where tradition and innovation intersect. From the lively Aristotelous Square to the charming old town of Ano Poli, Thessaloniki invites exploration and discovery. Whether it's enjoying the city's renowned cuisine, delving into its rich history, or simply soaking up the atmosphere along the seafront, Thessaloniki remains a captivating blend of the past and the present, offering something for every traveller.

Kusadasi has been an important port for centuries, hosting a variety of civilizations and for a time some of the most infamous pirates of the Mediterranean. Sizzling beaches next to sparkling blue water, lively bars and a bustling Grand Bazaar add up to exciting times in this buzzing Turkish city, but above all, it is the chief point of entry to the magnificent ruins of Ephesus.

The cruise liner departs at 20:00.

Day 5 - Crete (Heraklion) - Depart 19:00

Crete, the largest of the Greek islands, is a place where myths breathe life, landscapes defy the imagination, and history reaches back into the echoes of time. It's not just a town but an entire island that boasts a tapestry of splendid beaches, ancient treasures, vibrant cities, and dreamy villages, where locals share their traditions, wonderful cuisine, and generous spirit.

At the heart of Crete's endless appeal is its profound history, encapsulated in the ruins of the Minoan palace of Knossos, just outside the island's capital, Heraklion. This archaeological site, dating back to around 2000 BC, invites visitors to step back in time to the age of a civilization known for its sophisticated art and architecture. The island's mythological DNA is rich, with tales of gods and heroes, including the legend of the Minotaur and the labyrinth, which continue to fascinate and inspire.

But Crete's charm is not only found in its past. The island pulses with a vibrant present, seen in its bustling markets, picturesque ports, and lively tavernas. From the serene beauty of Elafonissi Beach with its pink-tinged sands to the imposing Samaria Gorge, perfect for adventurous hikers, Crete offers natural wonders in abundance. The Cretan diet, celebrated for its health benefits and delicious flavours, highlights the island's bounty, from olive oil and cheeses to fresh seafood and Cretan wines. In every aspect, Crete encapsulates the essence of Greece, inviting travellers to discover its secrets and fall in love with its enduring beauty.

Day 6 - Santorini (Greece) - Depart 00:30

Santorini, a gem in the Aegean Sea, is a destination that captures the imagination with its stark beauty and rich history. This crescent-shaped island, part of the Cyclades group in Greece, is most renowned for its dramatic views, stunning sunsets, and the iconic, whitewashed buildings that cling to its cliffs, especially in the towns of Fira and Oia. These picturesque settlements, with their narrow, winding pathways, are a testament to the unique Cycladic architecture, featuring blue-domed churches and bright, colorful doors that stand in vivid contrast to the sparkling blue sea below.

The island's geological history is as dramatic as its landscapes. Born from the remnants of a massive volcanic eruption in the 16th century BC, Santorini's caldera (the large, central crater) and the surrounding steep cliffs offer a visual narrative of the forces that shaped it. This cataclysmic event is believed to have influenced various legends, including possibly the myth of Atlantis. Today, visitors can explore the still-active volcano on Nea Kameni, a smaller island in the center of the caldera, adding a touch of adventure to the scenic beauty.

Santorini doesn't just appeal to the eye; it also offers a feast for the senses. The local cuisine, with its emphasis on fresh, locally-sourced ingredients, is a delight. The island's unique grape varieties, nurtured by the volcanic soil, produce distinctive wines, celebrated in vineyards and wineries scattered across its rugged terrain. Whether exploring ancient ruins, such as those at Akrotiri (a Minoan Bronze Age settlement preserved in volcanic ash), lounging at the black, red, and white volcanic beaches, or simply enjoying the tranquil beauty of the Aegean sunset, Santorini encapsulates a blend of history, beauty, and culture that continues to enchant visitors from around the globe.

Day 7 - Mykonos (Greece) - Depart 02:00

Mykonos, on the shores off the Aegean Sea, epitomises the quintessential charm of the Greek islands with its dazzling allure. Known for its labyrinthine streets, iconic windmills, and pristine beaches, this island seamlessly blends its rich historical tapestry with a pulsating modern vibe. The whitewashed buildings, accented with vibrant blue doors and window frames, create a picturesque setting that seems to have leaped out of a postcard. As the sun sets, the narrow pathways of Mykonos Town (Chora) come alive, teeming with an international crowd drawn by its renowned nightlife and haute cuisine.

The island's beaches are among its most compelling attractions, offering a variety for every type of visitor. From the family-friendly Ornos and Psarou to the party-centric Paradise and Super Paradise, each beach has its unique character, united by the crystal-clear waters and golden sands. For those seeking solace away from the buzz, the less frequented northern beaches provide a tranquil retreat.

Beyond its aesthetic and recreational offerings, Mykonos is steeped in mythology and history, with Delos, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, just a short boat ride away. This sacred island, believed to be the birthplace of Apollo and Artemis, offers a fascinating excursion for history buffs. Mykonos, with its blend of natural beauty, historical depth, and cosmopolitan flair, continues to enchant visitors, securing its place as a must-visit destination in the Aegean.

Day 8 - Milos (Greece) - Depart 19:00

Milos, Greece, is a captivating island in the Aegean Sea, famed for its stunning landscapes, rich history, and unique geological formations. Known as the jewel of the Cyclades, Milos boasts a dramatic coastline with more than 70 beaches, each offering its own unique beauty. Sarakiniko Beach is perhaps the most photographed, with its moon-like, white volcanic rock formations contrasting sharply against the deep blue sea, creating a mesmerizing, otherworldly landscape.

The island's history is equally fascinating, with its roots stretching back to ancient civilizations. Milos is renowned as the site where the famous statue of Aphrodite (the "Venus de Milo") was discovered, now a prized exhibit at the Louvre Museum in Paris. The island's past is also marked by its role in early Christian history, with catacombs near the ancient city of Tripiti testifying to its significance as a place of worship and refuge.

Today, Milos is a blend of traditional charm and modern amenities, offering visitors a wide range of experiences. From exploring quaint fishing villages like Klima, with its colorful syrmata (boathouses) built into the cliffs, to indulging in the local culinary delights, such as fresh seafood and the island’s unique volcanic wines.
