Soweto (an acronym for South Western Townships)
Soweto origins date back to 1905 when, using an outbreak of disease in the part of town now known as Newtown as an excuse, the then Johannesburg City Council took the opportunity of moving the black residents to a fenced area 20km south west of Johannesburg.
After the National Party took power in 1948, it instituted the Group Areas Act and forcibly moved black population groups out of inner Johannesburg areas, such as Sophiatown, to Soweto.
Today the city of Soweto has more than 2 million inhabitants. Under-resourced for a very long period, it still has large areas of dire poverty but it also now boasts shopping malls, including the large Maponya Mall; parks and recreation facilities; many restaurants and Bed and Breakfast establishments; the newly opened Soweto theatre; and Vista University campus which is part of the University of Johannesburg.
Soweto, a township known for its pivotal role in the fight against Apartheid, was established in 1905 when black residents were relocated from Newtown due to a disease outbreak. The National Party’s implementation of the Group Areas Act in 1948 forced the forced removal of many black residents from inner Johannesburg areas to Soweto. With a current population of over 2 million, Soweto has struggled with poverty but now boasts amenities such as shopping malls, parks, restaurants, and a university campus.

This museum is internationally recognized as the best museum on 20th century South Africa in the world. It recounts the political upheavals beginning in the last century and moves on to the transition from Apartheid state into the new era of hope and freedom as a democracy. Given the nature of its subject matter the viewing experience is very intense with a lot of texts – both written and visual: photographs and videos. The self-guided tour of the museum last approximately 2 -3 hrs.
Today we can stop for lunch at Wandie’s famous tavern.
after lunch we will stop to see the Catholic Church of Regina Mundi which played a crucial role during the repressive years of Apartheid when political meetings were banned and many sought refuge in the safety of this building. It is home to the famous Black Madonna.
Thereafter visit the Walter Sisulu Square of Dedication at Kliptown. Formerly known as Freedom Square it took its name from the site where, in 1955, the Congress of the People held a meeting attended by more than 3 000 people. Here the Freedom Charter, which formulated principles of a free and democratic society, was adopted.
You will then be taken back to your hotel for dinner and overnight, enriched with the knowledge of this most diverse city.
This morning after breakfast, you will be picked up at 9am for an urban city tour.
As we journey through the northern suburbs, including a glimpse of Mandela’s house in Houghton, we arrive at Munro Drive. From this vantage point, one can appreciate the lush suburban landscape that has earned Johannesburg its distinction as the world’s largest artificial urban forest.
Hillbrow is a neighbourhood that houses African immigrants from various parts of the continent. We pass through this area on our way from here.
Constitution Hill, located nearby, is a historically significant site with diverse layers. Initially, it served as a fort in the 19th century Boer Republic, but later transformed into a notorious prison. Among its most famous inmates were Gandhi during colonial times and Mandela under apartheid rule. Today, it houses the Constitutional Court of South Africa and visitors can take a tour of the prison and the court.
As we cross the Mandela Bridge, we arrive in Newtown – known as Jozi’s cultural precinct and the location of the renowned Market Theatre.
In Newtown’s periphery, there are several architecturally captivating structures such as the Johannesburg branch of the Reserve Bank, Helmut Jahn’s diamond building, and Anglogold Ashanti’s innovative transformation of the Turbine Hall.
For an extended tour, we could check out Chancellor House, located across from the Magistrate’s Court. This was where Mandela and Tambo practiced law. Nearby on Diagonal Street, you can find local trading stores and a traditional medicine shop (for those who are not easily scared).
As we move towards Main Street, we come across the headquarters of mining giants. Walking down the street, we can spot an old mining head gear and a large-scale replica of the golden Mapungubwe rhino. If you need a break, there are plenty of pavement cafes to grab a coffee.
Gandhi Square, a significant bus terminal, is named after the building that housed Gandhi’s law practice facing the square. For a panoramic view of Johannesburg’s central downtown area, including the gold reef to the south and west and the affluent suburbs to the north, visit the top floor of the Carlton Centre.
